Collection includes family letters, chiefly between Lucy's parents, Lucinda Muse Walton and William Claiborne Walton; clippings; genealogical information, pictures of the Walton and Fletcher families; and reminiscences and diaries of Lucy Fletcher. The reminiscences, 1829-1852, recall her childhood in Alexandria, Va., her education at the Catharine Beecher School in Hartford, Conn., social life in Virginia, travels in New England and Washington, D.C., marriage to Rev. Patterson Fletcher, and life as a minister's wife. Her diaries, 1852-1870, describe various places in which they lived; the Civil War years, including civilian hardships, the care of the sick and wounded, the fall of Richmond, and Afro-American soldiers and freedmen; Presbyterian Church affairs; and economic difficulties after the war.
