The Duke University Libraries have undergone a transformation that preserves the best of our tradition and history while introducing new spaces, services, and resources for our community. In the process, we've become one of the most popular destinations on campus. Across the Libraries, students and faculty from multiple disciplines gather to exchange ideas, explore our collections, participate in cultural events, and experiment with innovative tools that enrich teaching and learning.
Thanks to the support of our donors, Duke has built one of the top research library systems in the country. As our prominence and reputation grows, the whole university will benefit. Looking toward the future of academic research libraries, a number of priorities provide exciting giving opportunities, including:
- Lilly Library: One of the oldest and most architecturally significant buildings on Duke's campus, Lilly Library serves more than 1,800 first-year students on East Campus. The building has not been expanded or substantially renovated since it was completed in 1927. Expanding and renovating Lilly is a major priority for the Libraries.
- The William Styron Writing Prize Fund: The Libraries seek to establish the William Styron Writing Prize Fund, which would enable an annual monetary award that would recognize Styron’s contributions to American letters, while also encouraging budding writers at Duke University.
- Libraries Annual Fund: Unrestricted support gives us the flexibility we need to fund what is needed most at any given time, from establishing crucial initiatives like the Residence Hall Librarian Program for first-year students to creating unique classroom experiences like Archives Alive.
- Adopt a Digital Collection: Storage of our diverse and unique digital collections is a growing need. This initiative provides the opportunity to ensure that some of Duke's most distinctive materials are protected in perpetuity.
- Adopt a Book Program: Support for the conservation of library materials is crucial to keep our collections available for faculty, staff, and scholars. This program provides the opportunity for donors to adopt individual or collections of materials that are in need of preservation work.
